Award-winning social worker, national advisor, and PhD researcher Michael Elwan reflects on graduating from the Emerging Leaders in Governance Program and growing as a community leader.

Reflecting on my experience with the Engaging Young Leaders on Aged Care & Community Boards: Emerging Leaders in Governance Program (ELGP), I’m filled with gratitude for the personal and professional growth it created. The Emerging Leaders in Governance Program has been a springboard for leadership development, equipping me with the skills, insight, and relationships needed to meaningfully contribute to Western Australia’s community sector and governance landscape.

A highlight of this journey was visiting Community Vision Australia Limited, The Y WA, and Ruah Community Services, where I saw firsthand the essential services they provide despite the pressures facing the sector. Watching their teams work with such dedication reinforced the importance of values-driven leadership in aged care and community services.

One of my proudest achievements through ELGP was contributing to our collaborative governance project, “Personal Liabilities of Board Directors: Understanding and Mitigating Risks” . This work reflects our shared commitment to strengthening governance capability and supporting future board directors with practical, accessible resources.

The Emerging Leaders in Governance Program has been more than a learning experience; it has reaffirmed my belief in strong leadership, community-driven decision-making, and the power of governance to create meaningful and lasting change.
